I enjoy painting landscapes and have had fun with abstracts, but lately my focus is on place.  I started with a series of small paintings of places that I love, from my neighborhood to New Mexico to Italy.  Then I stayed closer to home with my downtown Winston-Salem scenes in 2009.

Early in 2010 I exhibited paintings of the houses that caught my imagination on a trip to Mendocino.  They are from an early morning walk when the sunlight on the houses created striking contrasts, with strong lines between the bright colors and dark shadows softened by the foliage and delicate blooms of the gardens.

I am currently working on a series of paintings of the beach huts on Portland Bill on the Dorset coast in southern England.  After being warned not to set out on the 4 mile hike there - too windy, too cold, clouds, rain - we went ahead.  It was cold.  But the sun was bright and the English Channel was blue.  I saw the huts, blue, red, green, brown with brightly colored shutters, and I knew what my next show would be.
